From the Headlines
Lady Trojans drawing national attention
The Lassiter volleyball team is now getting national recognition. The Lady Trojans cracked the top 50 in PrepVolleyball.com's "Top 100 High School Rankings" at No. 49 after starting the 2008 campaign with a perfect 19-0 record. Lassiter, also ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA, had a close call against Etowah last Tuesday when it dropped its first game of the season before squeaking out a 24-26, 25-14, 31-29 victory. With that aside, the Lady Trojans won their other matches convincingly, including victories over No. 2-ranked Pope and Marist, AAAA's top-ranked team.

Lassiter is located just 3 miles from Pope and Walton
and could surprise everyone in AAAAA. They have 6’5” MB
Taylor Montgomery, who will provide strong senior leadership
for the Trojans. Her big block forces teams to change their
attack, and her arm swing has improved so much that she is
unstoppable at times. 6’3” sophomore Chrissy Ricketts
anchors the other middle position, and she is going to make
other teams say, “Where’d that girl come from?” way more
often than they want to. Defensive Specialist Melissa
Woodall controls the back line and her phenomenal ball
control will help this team pull off some big wins. Emily
Weissert returns as starting setter, and is one of the best
in Cobb County. Hannah Reinke, Erin Maxwell and Katie
McCollister are a bit on the small side for front row
players, but they’re just following in the footsteps of
Lassiter alum Hannah Lawing (now at South Carolina), who
proved that smaller players can still dominate as hitters.
Add in freshman sensation Rebecca Arndt on the right side,
and this team looks awfully balanced. Look for Lassiter to
score some big upsets this season, and if-and-when they find
their groove, they may find themselves in the final four…
and then who knows?

Cobb County
> 1. Lassiter: One of the few undefeated teams in Class AAAAA, Lassiter had head-turning victories against Pope and Marist on the same day last week. The Trojans haven’t lost a game this season. They demolished Pope, 25-13, 25-15.
